This is one heroic manual! Unfortunately, it is long on words and short on what to do other than “see your vet”. I bought the book so that I would know what is troubling my dogs; I know how to get to the vet, but can’t afford his charges except when something is serious and I can’t fix. Not to mention, the closest vet is 25 miles from here.
The book might be good for someone who wants to know a LITTLE about everything under the sun. It’s utility would be vastly improved if it had generous color pictures of specific conditions, particularly skin conditions. It would be nice to suggest what the treatment should be for many conditions superficially described. Haven’t seen one, but the Veteranerian edition would be closer to what I want.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANY PET OWNER OR LOVER. VERY INSIGHTFUL AND EASY TO FOLLOW FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON WITHOUT A CARRIER IN THE MEDICAL FIELD.

I am a cat breeder, and this book just did not have enough detailed information for me. If you were just a pet owner, and wanted general information, maybe it would work better for you. But I was looking for drug dosages and what to do in case of emergencies, and this information simply was not in this book. The information I am looking for is in the general Merck Veterinary manual, so I thought this would be similar but more geared towards pets, rather than livestock. Overall, I found the book boring and disappointing.

The Merck manual for humans is unbeatable. This book is really not TOO bad.

This is a basic manual of animal health and distress. However, if you are looking for a text that not only describes the distress, provides a diagnosis, and then outlines a treatment course;this book is not for you. This book stays at the level of description and theory. This text is best used in conjunction with one that does provide treatment prescriptions.
