Just as with humans, there is a debate as to exactly what immunizations a pet “really” needs, how often they need them, where to inject the pet, and which, if any, immunizations are safe.

Veterinarian prices have jumped a lot in the last few years. The disparity in immunization prices between vets for the same immunizations is huge. And every last veteranian has a massive mark up on the immunizations especially when compared to just buying the immunizations yourself from a feed store or on line and injecting the pet yourself or going to PetMart on immunizations day. Another example is a vet giving a one year rabies shot instead of the 3 year (when available) to stick it to the pet owner two more times and this is as disdainful as the city pet license practice which forces pet owners to buy a rabies tag every year even if your pet gets a 3 year rabies shot. It seems to be all about the money -not the pet. Overblown vet immunization charges and how often to get them is reason enough to buy this book.

This book is a must have for every pet parent’s library. Written by an experienced and highly respected authority in the veterinary world, this book is a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know to ensure high-quality health care for your furry family members.

While much progress has been made in veterinary medicine, there is still a wide disparity in the level of care provided for pets, and choosing a veterinarian can be a daunting proposition. Without knowing what to look for, pet owners may unknowingly wind up with substandard care. Dr. Murray presents thorough information on a variety of topics, such as

    - how to choose a veterinarian

    - what to look for during your pet’s exam

    - when it’s time to seek a specialist

    - how to make sure your pet is properly monitored and protected during anesthetic procedures

    - proper pain management for your pet

    - the lowdown on vaccinations

    - the growing realm of alternative veterinary medicine

    -the latest pet insurance plans

I was particularly impressed with the chapter on the use and misuse of steroid medications. This is one of the most notorious issues in the practice of conventional veterinary medicine, and many veterinarians are frustrated by what they feel is a misuse of this drug by some in the profession. Dr. Murray looks at the issues surrounding steroids one by one, and explains why these drugs need to be used judiciously.

Filled with solid information and a variety of check lists and work sheets to help the reader put the information in the book to practical use, this book will help pet parents become knowledgeable and effective advocates for their pet’s health.

Combining this with her fine writing skills, she has given us an indespensible guide to pet care. She treats subjects as disparate as euthenasia decisions to the cost of pet health care with intelligence and a great humanitarian sense.
